Brainy Bunch First Lego League Robotics Team Places 2nd in World Invitational!

The Brainy Bunch FLL Robotics Team, after attending 4 days of the World Invitational First Lego League Robotics Tournament in Florida, came in 2nd Place out of 59 teams in the Research category!  This means the judges were particularly impressed with their innovative solution to a real-world problem (milk contamination).  Their Terahertz device for detecting milk contamination and their subsequent pending patent really impressed the judges.   They also came in 2nd place overall during the first ever held Robot Derby (fastest robot out of the starting line).  What made this win special is how the kids rallied behind their French Alliance partners at the tournament and together they came in 1st and 2nd place!  Their team work and spirit was exceptional.

Congratulations to team members Aly Luckett, Andy Zhao, Dhriti Vij, Ryan Gottwald, Arthur Tisseront, Jordan Ganley and their coaches!

Once Again, Kilmer Rocks WordMasters!

Two teams of students representing Kilmer Middle School recently won highest honors in the WordMasters Challenge, a national language arts competition entered by approximately 220,000 students annually.

Competing in the difficult Blue Division of the Challenge, the school's seventh graders tied for first place in the nation in the year's second meet, held in February, among 294 school teams participating at this level and in this division. At the same time, the school's 8th graders tied for fourth place in the nation among among 302 competing teams.

Seventh graders Vishal Bhasin, Melody Chiang, Alyssa Czaban, Quiana Dang, Ethan Epstein, Heather Hong Fong, Emma Kohm, Jessica Lewis, Nathan Oo, Jordyn Park, Sarina Prasad, Mistaya Smith, Jay Swarup, Andy Tan, Khoi Tran, and Devlin Wesolowski, and eighth graders Kat Hanna, Nikhil Sakhamuri, and Dhriti Vij all earned perfect scores in the meet, while in the entire country only 97 seventh graders and only 24 eighth graders did so.

The WordMasters Challenge is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of relationships. The students will participate in one more WordMasters meet during the coming months, and medals and certificates will be awarded in June to those who achieved and/or improved the most in the course of the year.

Kilmer Students Attend Noblis Lecture

Eighth grade Kilmer students Aly Luckett, Jordan Ganley, Dhriti Vij, Ryan Gottwald, Andy Zhao and Arthur Tisseront attended a lecture at Kilmer Middle School's partner, Noblis, in Falls Church by Dr. John Moore, a professor from the MIT Media Lab in Boston.  His thought-provoking lecture gave 40 students from Kilmer, Thomas Jefferson and Bishop O'Connell as well members of NOBLIS, the Governor of Maine and other notable figures from the Military, a look into the future of how medical care may be delivered differently in the future, and specifically how the doctor/patient relationship is poised for change in the next decade.

Kilmer students were, in fact, officially recognized and applauded by the host at Noblis who stated that "we have students from our partnership school, Kilmer Middle School, here today: Please stand up! I understand that these students were a part of the Virginia State National Science Olympiad Team!  Let's give them a round of applause!"

Kilmer Student Work Featured on E-Luminate Web Site

The student work created by four current eighth graders at Kilmer (the students were in 7th grade when they researched and put together the project) is featured on the E-Luminate (formerly called Books of Hope) web site as a sample book.

According to the E-Luminate website, the organization is "a 501c3 nonprofit service-learning program that engages U.S. schools at all grade levels in creating nonfiction electronic educational materials (in the form of PowerPoints, PDFs, Word documents, videos, audio, etc.) for some of the world's most vulnerable children."

The assignment, currently in progress in the classrooms of two of our 7th grade teachers, creates an authentic learning experience for our students as they create educational material that will be used in Uganda and Sierra Leon.

The project on display, titled Main Events of World War II, can be viewed under the RESOURCES tab of the E-Luminate web site. Select SAMPLE BOOKS and scroll to Advanced Resources.
